How to use the result

Utilization is part of the amounts-owed category, about 30% of a FICO Score for the general population, according to FICO. Because most models look at your current reported balances, it's one of the few things that can change within a billing cycle.

  1. Find each card's statement closing date in your app or statement.
  2. Pay the amount shown for each card a few days before its closing date, starting with the highest per-card utilization.
  3. Check your reports after the next statements post to confirm the lower balances were reported.
  4. If a card shows no limit or the wrong limit on your report, that can inflate utilization; you can dispute it.

Utilization calculator FAQ

How is credit utilization calculated?

Add up the balances on your revolving accounts and divide by the sum of their credit limits, then multiply by 100. Scoring models look at that overall figure and at each card individually.

What utilization should I aim for?

Lower is generally better. Under 30% is a common goal, and people with the highest scores often show single-digit utilization. There's no single magic number, and utilization is only one factor.

Why does my card show high utilization when I pay in full?

Issuers usually report the balance on your statement closing date. If you pay after the statement closes, the reported balance can still be high. Paying before the closing date lowers what gets reported.

Is anything I enter saved?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to CreditGod or stored.
